TMP’s Guide To Choosing The Right Caliber

TMP’s Guide To Choosing The Right Caliber

Despite what you’re willing to argue, there is no “perfect” rifle cartridge for each type of game animal. Each caliber is good for a range of different game animals. One end is too light (won’t produce a clean kill), and the other end is too heavy (causing excessive damage to meat and trophies). How can you determine which caliber is best? We have created this guide to help you in choosing the right caliber!

Choosing The Right Caliber:

  • .17 HMR, .22 Long, .22 Mag-These rimfire rounds are best for small game, specifically short-range varmints.
  • .223, .22-250, .243 Win-These light kickers are light and accurate but are still strong enough to drop a deer.
  • .270, .30-30, .30-06, 308 Win-These calibers excel with everything in between wild boar and white tail deer.
  • .300 Win Mag, .338, .375 H&H, 7mm Rem Mag-Meant for long range large game (elk, bear, etc.), these calibers can kill from up to 4 football fields away.
  • .416 Rigby, 460 Wtby Mag, 500 Nitro, 577 Nitro Exp-These large, tough calibers are best for heavy game. Just a warning, they kick both ways.
  • 75 mm-Good luck, that’s all we have to say. This caliber is best for T Rex.
